After the Fukushima nuclear accident, complex and expensive large nuclear power plants were shut down one after another, and more reactors were closed than opened. NuScale Power, a company in Oregon, USA, believes that the future trend of nuclear energy is smaller, cheaper and safer. The company plans to design small modular reactors to supplement renewable energy, providing backup power when there is no wind and no sun.
The company's co-founder and CTO Jose Reyes said that large reactors are designed to take advantage of economies of scale, and their designs are based on microeconomics. Their method is not a large reactor, but to connect 12 small reactors, can be built in the factory, and then transported by truck.
NuScale's design does not depend on pumps or generators that may fail in an emergency. It uses passive cooling, and the reactor in the containment is placed in a huge underground water tank that can absorb heat. No extra water is required and no human operation is required.
