Technology would like to create a dynamic smart home do? So before you, there are two options. For one, you can buy a bunch of smart gadgets that communicate with other smart products. Second, you can use sensor tags to transform all devices and create a rough network system. The first option is very expensive, while the second one is particularly troublesome. But don't worry. In the near future, there may be a third option for you to choose from: a simple sensor that plugs into a power outlet to connect all the equipment in the room.
This idea stems from Carnegie Mellon University's Synthetic Sensors project, which aims to develop a smart device that can sense the family. On May 11th, ACM CHI 2017 international computer interactive conference ended in Denver, USA. At this conference, the debut of this small device was able to capture all the environmental data needed to turn ordinary household goods into smart devices. Although this is just a model, it is impressive enough.
There are 10 sensors in this device. Once it is plugged into a power outlet, it instantly “transforms†to the eyes and ears of the room. It can capture data such as sound, humidity, electromagnetic noise, motion, and light (researchers excluded camera functionality for privacy). Subsequently, it uses a machine learning algorithm to translate the resulting data into concrete information about what happened in the home. For example, a synthetic sensor can tell you whether you forgot to turn off the oven, how much water was wasted from the leaking faucet, or whether your roommate has cleared your snacks again.
For a long time, people are exploring ubiquitous sensing concepts. However, at present, we only rely on products such as Nest, Sen.se and Notion to start our initial smart home. CMU researchers hope to integrate multiple sensing functions into one device to control other unconnected devices, which is like a home-based universal remote control.
Today, although sensors have become small and exquisite, collecting data is not difficult, but there are still some thorny problems. Principal researcher Gierad Laput hopes that it can help people solve environmental problems in real situations, such as calculating how much water is needed each month and monitoring the safety of various family devices. Therefore, how to translate data into related specific information needs further investigation. Laput said: "From the user's point of view, the spectrum of EMI radiation in coffee machines is not important. They only care about when the coffee can be cooked."
The data captured by sensors is very complicated and researchers need to label each object or action. For example, the act of simply opening the refrigerator produces a large amount of data: Hearing hissing, seeing light, and feeling the action. Laput and his team identified this information by setting up machine learning algorithms to build a large library of perceptual objects and actions. In this process, a large number of sensors are particularly important. Irfan Essa, director of the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Machine Learning at Georgia Institute of Technology, said: "These are all data inferences. If you only have one sensor, it's even harder to distinguish between differences."
Anthony Rowe, a CMU researcher in charge of sensor technology, explains that a truly useful universal sensor must be able to capture and recognize the ever-changing nuances around it. For example, even if the device is moved from one counter to another, the sensor should be able to distinguish the coffee machine from the blender. Similarly, even if new equipment is added to the kitchen, the entire system should not be affected. Ensuring the "robustness level" of this device is a major problem in improving machine learning. Rowe said: "In the short term, a simpler solution is to first provide users with interfaces that allow them to point out problems and reset the system."
It is difficult to do this with the integrated sensor prototype proposed by CMU. Although technically reliable, no interfaces have yet been developed. However, the research group stated that it may eventually choose to establish an application control system or integrate sensor technology into the smart home center to capture more subtle changes in the environment and fully understand the user's surroundings.
Laput said that building a better understanding of your environment than you yourself is the ultimate goal of smart home.
