The difference between a floating ball valve and a fixed ball valve

It is understood that the ball of the floating ball valve is floating. Under the action of the medium pressure, the ball can generate a certain displacement and press on the sealing ring at the outlet end to ensure the sealing of the outlet end, which is a single-sided forced seal.

The ball of the fixed ball valve is fixed and does not move after being pressed. Therefore, the two sealing rings should have sufficient pre-tightening force to ensure the sealing when designing, which is a double-sided forced sealing. Thrust or plain bearings are usually mounted on the upper and lower valve stems that are integral with the ball.

The design of the floating ball valve should focus on whether the sealing material can withstand the medium acting load of the ball. Because the ball is subjected to the load of the working medium and is transmitted to the outlet seal, the floating ball structure is widely used for medium and low pressure ball valves. In addition, the design should also consider the need for large torques when operating large diameter ball valves.
