Chongqing University, China Academy of Space Technology Xi'an Branch, Xi'an University of Electronic Science and Technology, and Chongqing Laoshan District People's Government signed a cooperation agreement in Chongqing to start construction of China's first space solar power station experimental base in Laoshan District, Chongqing.

It is reported that the concept of space solar power station was first proposed by American scientist Glazer in 1968, that is, a solar power station built in the earth orbit, and a power generation system that continuously supplies electricity to the ground through wireless transmission. Compared with the ground solar power station, the space solar power station is not affected by natural factors such as day and night, weather, and the utilization rate of solar energy is also higher.

According to Yang Shizhong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor at Chongqing University, the maximum power generation per square meter of solar cells in northwestern China is about 0.4 kilowatts, and the power generation in the stratosphere is about 7-8 kilowatts, and about 36,000 kilometers from the surface of the earth. In geosynchronous orbit, the power generation can reach 10-14 kW. “Space solar power station is a power generation system that builds power generation equipment in geosynchronous orbit and transmits electric energy to the ground through microwave wireless transmission.”

Bao Weimin, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the Science and Technology Commission of China Aerospace Science and Technology Group, said that China, the United States, and Japan have proposed space solar power plant development plans, but they are all in the basic research stage; space solar power plants need to solve three key problems: How to transport power generation equipment to geosynchronous orbit and assemble power generation through large-scale launch vehicles, and how to transmit power to the ground. Third, how to ensure equipment safety and environmental safety. "The three issues are still in the basic exploration," he said.

According to Xie Xin, the vice president of Chongqing Military-civilian Integration and Innovation Research Institute, the space solar power plant experimental base started in Lushan will be guided by the frontier of space energy technology development to carry out high-power long-distance wireless energy transmission and environmental safety issues. The basic research and applied research have promoted the establishment of the National Science Project in Chongqing, assisted the construction of Chongqing Science City, and created a new energy industry technology gathering area centered on the base.

It is reported that from 2019 to 2020, during the construction period of the experimental base, it will invest 200 million yuan to build a space test site, a balloon platform commissioning hall, a laboratory building, an iron tower and other facilities, and carry out microwave energy transmission through a floating platform with a height of 50-300 meters. Experiment; 2021-2025 will build small and medium-scale stratospheric solar power plants and realize grid-connected power generation; after 2025, work on large-scale space solar power plant systems will begin. At present, the project has completed the development of a set of high-altitude mooring anchored helium floating platform, which can realize the preliminary demonstration simulation and verification of space solar power station, wireless microwave energy transmission and space information network.

"From the current point of view, the construction of space solar power plants faces many difficulties, but its promotion process will effectively promote the development of rocket technology, microwave technology, space manufacturing, commercial aerospace and other fields." Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor of Xidian University of Electronic Science and Technology Duan Baoyan said.
