Scientists at the University of Manchester have developed a banner that can harvest both solar and wind energy. Although they are currently not enough to power the house or even charge products such as smartphones, they are sufficient to power environmental sensors. This kind of energy harvesting device adopts the inverted flag setting, the leading edge can move freely, but the trailing edge is fixed, contrary to the flag waving in the wind outside the government building.
The main body of this flag consists of piezoelectric strips and flexible photovoltaic cells that collect energy when swinging in the wind, while flexible photovoltaic cells capture solar energy.
Under the influence of wind, these flags are bent from side to side in a repeating manner, also known as limit cycle oscillation, which makes them very suitable for deformation with piezoelectric materials to generate uniform energy. At the same time, flexible solar panels bring double benefits. As unstable substances, they trigger the flapping motion of the flag at lower wind speeds, and of course can capture the surrounding light to generate electricity.
These flags will not generate much power, but the research team believes that the power can be used to drive environmental sensors, monitor air pollution, noise and urban ambient temperature, and of course can also drive small portable electronic devices.
