The use of 3D printing technology on furniture is not new. Dutch designer Dirk was inspired by this, and made a 3D printer using environmentally friendly materials, and then added his own unique streamline design to create his own unique "endless" 3D furniture.
Waste robot turned into 3D printer
Dirk Vander Kooij is a Dutch designer. During his graduation work, he accidentally came into contact with a 3D printer, which gave him the idea of using 3D printing technology and environmentally friendly materials to make furniture.
At that time, ordinary 3D printers had many limitations in terms of materials and craftsmanship, which could not meet the designer's requirements for home design and production, and could not print large objects. Dirk accidentally discovered that an old machine could meet his requirements.
This old machine is recycled from China and is an old industrial robot. Dirk reorganized and renovated it into a three-dimensional printing robot that manufactures creative furniture. He installed a "mechanical arm" to the robot, so that the 3D printer is more flexible than the ordinary XYZ three-axis linear printer and can print from different angles.
"Older machines may be bulkier and have fewer automated procedures. Because of this, during the printing process, the designer can slowly adjust the shape of the work ... This will not cause material waste." Dirk explained.
The printing materials used by the Dutch designer are recycled industrial, construction waste or various types of recycled plastic. His series of representative works, called "Endless" (Endless), here have two meanings, the first is the use of materials to achieve infinite recycling, no residual materials are produced during the manufacturing process, "recycling-recycling-reuse" is his home environmental protection Mode; the second is that the design line is like a looping curve, flowing a unique aesthetic in the space.
Endless-infinitely circulating material
The furniture products designed by Dirk are made of recyclable and environmentally friendly materials. Among them, the most famous series is called "Endless Flow" (Endless Flow), which uses all the inner tanks of abandoned refrigerators. Most of these plastics are mainly white, which can be dyed in different colors and have a good effect.
It is worth mentioning that Dirk's own 3D printer will not cause material waste. Since the designer can manipulate the entire printing process, he can stop to modify, check, and reshape at the completion of each step until all the materials are properly used and configured to achieve zero waste.
Endless-endless flowing lines
One of the characteristics of Dirk's design is the smooth flowing lines. His 3D printer can print the shape of rounded corners, using synthetic fibers to build smooth curves.
His design concept combined with environmentally friendly materials and advanced printing technology quickly caught people's attention at major furniture exhibitions. His first striking work was the "elephant pattern table", which is made of recycled plastic and then baked to simulate the appearance of elephant skin.
Another famous work of Dirk is the "satellite lamp" exhibited at the Milan Furniture Fair. This lamp uses glass-like synthetic materials and is a floor lamp placed outdoors.
Dirk's unique design ideas and environmental awareness have earned him many honors and awards, and now he has his own studio. He discovered new home-making skills and was constantly trying new methods. As the introduction of his studio's official website said, "We are constantly exploring new design methods. This process is as interesting as the new design itself."
