Altaeros, an affiliate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, developed a small hydrogen-filled airship that is equipped with a huge wind turbine. It will soon appear over Fairbanks, Alaska, and researchers will conduct an 18-month test of the turbine's airship. The airship will be suspended at an altitude of up to 1,000 feet (about 304 meters) to absorb wind energy and transmit it to the ground.
According to foreign media reports, this small airship full of hydrogen was developed by Altairos, an affiliate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It is equipped with a huge wind turbine. It will soon appear over Fairbanks, Alaska, and researchers will conduct an 18-month test of the turbine's airship. The airship will be suspended at an altitude of up to 1,000 feet (about 304 meters) to absorb wind energy and transmit it to the ground.
Altaeros called its technology BAT (an acronym for suspended aviation turbines) and claims that it produces twice as much energy as ground turbines. But the cost of this system's energy supply will be more expensive than the ground turbines. Altaeros' turbine project costs about 18 cents per kilowatt-hour, while ground turbines cost about 4 to 5 cents per kilowatt-hour.
The company hopes that this limited operation will confirm the effectiveness of this method. The wind speed on the ground will fluctuate, but at an altitude of 1,000 to 2,000 feet, the wind speed is more stable and several times the surface wind speed. Putting wind turbines into the air will also placate people's dissatisfaction with the appearance of the ground turbine. In addition, very few birds fly at this altitude, so they are less likely to make damage to the turbine blades.
The BAT project aims at remote areas where energy is usually very expensive. It requires only a small amount of surface facilities to work. Energy is transmitted to the ground through a high-strength conductive line and then introduced into the local grid. The project will cost Altares Company $1.3 million to conduct an 18-month flight test, but it will also prove that this is a very promising technology.
