Why did you choose Baoqing County, Heilongjiang Province to establish this national research center? Academician Tang Huajun, President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, explained that Heilongjiang is the largest japonica rice planting area in the country and the highest latitude rice cultivation area in China. In 2016, the rice planting area and total output reached 48.05 million mu and 22.55 million tons respectively, accounting for 10.6% and 10.9% are truly "one in ten paddy fields"; in particular, the commodity rate of rice in Heilongjiang reaches about 70%, which is of great significance for ensuring the safety of rations in Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang and Guangdong. On the other hand, per capita annual consumption of japonica rice in China has increased from 50 kg to over 70 kg in the past 15 years. Brands such as “Heilongjiang Rice†and “Wuchang Rice†enjoy a high reputation in the national market and have strong product advantages. Baoqing County, located between the second and third accumulated temperature zones, is an important commercial grain production base in the country. This is used as a research base to strengthen the selection of cold-tolerant japonica rice varieties, strengthen direct seeding machinery and precision hole direct seeding technology research and development. It is to closely follow the major strategic needs of the country and focus on solving major scientific and technological problems in the development of the rice industry in Northeast China.
He said that after the establishment of the Northern Rice Research Center, it will form a complementary structure of "one institute" + "two north and south centers" together with the China National Rice Research Institute and the Hainan Nanfang Center.
